Glass transforms store, warehouse

Photo: Kickstand Studio LLCLambert Architecture and Construction Services completed a renovation project for 522 Lady St LLC in Columbia, S.C., that transformed a 1930s-era cigar and candy store, and adjacent warehouse into office space with a modern design. The glass was selected to create a contemporary design that sets off structural elements of legacy buildings, including red brick walls and white stucco surfaces.

Josh Boltinhouse, AIA, LEED AP, is an architect at Lambert Architecture and Construction Services. "We wanted glass that would showcase the building's historic features while creating a modern office space that is comfortable and full of natural light," Boltinhouse says. "Rather than creating a monolithic look, we wanted to see right into the space and show off its historical character."

Alan Kinder is design manager at Guardian Glass. "Lambert's 522 Lady Street project is an impressive blend of old and new, and it shows how glass can modernize existing architecture," he says.

Aldora Aluminum and Glass Products Inc. fabricated, and Ace Glass Inc. installed, Guardian Glass' SunGuard SNX 51/23 glass at a stair tower visible from the street, all existing window locations and new expanses of glass that overlook the city and nearby Congaree River. The glass has a 51 percent visible light transmission and 0.23 solar heat gain coefficient. Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope supplied its Series 3000 Thermal MultiPlane storefront system, Reliance Curtain Wall and WS-500 doors for the project, which was completed in December 2015.

Boltinhouse says the project was successful. "The people who work here love this space," he says.
