The Air National Guard Base in Martinsburg, W.Va., is underway to prepare the 167th Airlift Wing for the arrival of 11 C-5 Galaxy aircraft that will be housed at the base. The C-5 is one of the largest aircrafts in the world and the largest airlifter in the Air Force inventory. More than $190 million in federal funding has been invested at the facility for new hangars, fuel lines and a flight simulator.
Metl-Span, Lewisville, Texas, supplied approximately 70,000 square feet (6,503 m2) of 2-inch (51-mm) CF-42 Mesa wall panels for the C-5 maintenance hangar. The panel lengths range from 20 to 45 feet
(6 to 14 m) and are finished in Sandstone. The gambrel roof design required the wall panels to be bevel cut, according to Ed Carrozza, project coordinator with the installer, Iron City Constructors Inc., Aliquippa, Pa. The CF Mesa panels ensured symmetry from outside to inside the building.
Clark Construction, Bethesda, Md., was the general contractor. CH2M HILL, Herndon, Va., and DMJM Design, San Francisco, were the design team.
