Metal Roofing Saves Money for California Police Station

When the original design for a new police facility in Gilroy, Calif., came in over budget, the architect, WLC Architects, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., decided to replace the concrete tile mansard with Met-Tile facsimile roofing in Mission Clay.

“Met-Tile gave us the look we wanted but at a much lower cost, and its reduced weight also lightened the structure so that we could value-engineer the building’s steel frame to accommodate lighter loads,” said Frank Cuomo, senior project architect at WLC Architects.

The Ontario, Calif.-based Met-Tile system consisted of long-length, 26-gauge zinc-aluminum-coated steel panels. The majority of the 15,000 square feet (1,394 m2) of panels was used to create a decorative mansard that shields the rooftop mechanical equipment from view. The panels also function as a roof over two gable areas above the main entries. The general contractor was S.J. Amoroso Construction Co. Inc., Redwood Shores, Calif.; the metal roofing installer was Facility Systems Inc., San Jose, Calif.; and the Met-Tile dealer was Blackwood Associates Inc., Fairfield, Calif.
