The Indiana Department of Administration Law Enforcement Center in Elkhart, Ind., features 4,300 square feet (400 m2) of Holland, Mich.-based Dri-Design’s 0.8-alumminum panels in Musket Gray, Granite and custom State Police Blue. The panels range in size from 1 by 2 feet
(0.3 to 0.6 m) to 4 by 4 feet (1.2 by 1.2 m) with colors and sizes installed in a random design pattern.
The 16,000-square-foot (1,486-m2) office and training center is a joint venture with the Indiana Department of Administration and the Indiana State Police. The high-tech facility functions as an Indiana State Police post, and also houses the components of three additional Indiana law enforcement agencies. The challenging design program required balancing the needs of diverse users in one seamless office space while retaining an individual identification for each. The center is the first building in the state to co-locate four law enforcement agencies.
Designed to meet LEED Silver certification, the center is located within a highway right-of-way on a partial brownfield site and features a variety of sustainable building strategies. Low-impact site design utilized vegetated swales, rain gardens and native landscaping.
American Structurepoint Inc., Indianapolis, was the architect; Schust Engineering Inc., Fort Wayne, Ind., was the subcontractor/installer; and Spohn Associates, Indianapolis, was the distributor.
