The New York Air National Guard 105th Airlift Wing new fire station at the Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, N.Y., was completed in winter 2008. The project goal was to provide a fire/crash rescue facility, properly sited to adequately support the Air National Guard unit’s aircraft, the commercial operations of an adjacent international airport, the base and portions of the surrounding community. The 26,600-square-foot (2,471-m2),
two-story facility addresses the unit’s needs for adequate bunk, living and training areas.
The required siting of the building-directly on the flight line, adjacent to the intersection of two active taxiway/runways-presented the primary challenge; the solution needed to address concerns regarding the building’s height, sound controls and relative remoteness, including restricting personnel access between the building and base proper.
One key feature of the building is the cantilevered Alarm Center, providing views directly to the aircraft parking areas, while another vital feature is the enclosed, protected courtyard, which provides the 24-hour shift a much-desired outdoor recreation area. Additionally, other areas provided in the facility include a training classroom, administrative offices, turnout gear storage, exercise room, laundry room, shared bunk rooms, lounge, day room, recreation room and dining/kitchen area. The building is constructed of a steel frame with masonry infill and metal wall and roof cladding, masonry and stucco. Englert Inc., Perth Amboy, N.J., supplied its Englert 2500 Series standing-seam roof panels, Englert UniRib C36 metal wall panels, fascias, soffits and gutters for the project.
