Steel at work: New public works operations center is source of pride

Bothell, Wash, is well on its way to having a new $7 million Public Works Operations Center located in the Canyon Park Development, north of downtown. Designed by Seattle based Hutchison & Maul Architecture, along with Wagner Architects, Seattle, the project includes a new 16,000-square-foot (1,486-m2), two-story administration building and a new 21,500-square-foot (1,997-m2), one-story shop building with a 7,100-square-foot (660-m2) mezzanine level.

According to Tom Maul, with Hutchison & Maul Architecture, the goal of the project is to create a functional, low-maintenance building that is a pleasure to work in and is a source of pride for the city and its employees.

The administration building will be a steel frame structure clad with metal roofing and siding from AEP Span, Tacoma, Wash. Containing offices, locker rooms and a lunchroom, it is designed to serve as a back-up EOC and public meeting room.

The administration building is on track to achieve LEED Silver certification, and incorporates a variety of sustainable features, including a white reflective roof; sunshades at the south and east windows; skylights; large north-facing windows for natural light and views; a large cantilevered roof on the west end to mitigate sun exposure and create an outdoor area adjacent to the lunch room; and a mechanical system that incorporates VAV systems. Santa Monica, Calif.-based Oldcastle Glass Vistawall will be supplying the windows, sunshades and skylights.

The shops building will be a pre-cast concrete structure with steel trusses, also clad with AEP Span’s metal roofing and siding. It will contain enclosed shops for the city’s maintenance and operations divisions, along with enclosed parking for city maintenance vehicles. A 30-foot (9-m) cantilevered roof overhang will provide cover for vehicles.

Metal was chosen as a key component for this project for its low maintenance and uniform finish. Construction is expected to be complete in fall 2010.
