SJI Design Awards announced

The Steel Joist Institute, Forest, Va., has announced the winners of its 2009 Design Awards. The awards are presented in three categories–industrial, non-industrial and unique. The three winning companies receive a $2,000 scholarship in their name to a school of their choice for an engineering student. The winners are:
·Industrial: Giffels LLC/IBI Group, Southfield, Mich., for the 1.27 million-square-foot steel and stainless-steel processing facility Thyssenkrupp Stainless USA in Calvert, Ala. Vulcraft, Florence, S.C., served as steel joist manufacturer.
·Non-industrial: Glotman Simpson Consulting Engineers, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, for the 1.4 million-square-foot Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Facilities. Canam Steel Works, Saint-Gédéon, Québec, Canada, served as steel joist manufacturer.
·Unique: Bliss & Nyitray Inc., Miami, for the Rip Ride Rockit-Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla. CMC Joist & Deck, Irving, Texas, served as steel joist manufacturer. Eligible projects must have been constructed within the last three years, located in the United States, Canada or Mexico, and the steel joists and/or joist girders must have been manufactured by an active member of the Steel Joist Institute. Judging of each project was evaluated and based on flexibility, speed of construction, value and aesthetic considerations.
