The products that manufacturers develop for metal building systems follow the same trends that building products have in other parts of the construction industry. There are two overriding driving forces: sustainability and ease of use.
Those two foundational impulses have many off-shoots. Sustainable products also tend to be higher performing products in other areas. Products that are easy to install also help fulfill more aggressive warranty programs and often combine two functions into one, such as insulated metal panels, which provide cladding and insulation in one installation.
Below are products in the metal building industry that define these trends.
Therm-All Inc.
Therm-All’s MaxTight air barrier system for metal buildings meets IECC and ASHRAE air barrier requirements for all construction types. It is compatible with a variety of insulation applications including liner systems, double-layer fiberglass and single-layer fiberglass. Its air barrier is placed toward the exterior of envelopes, which protects it from potential damage.
DuPont de Nemours Inc.
DuPont de Nemours’ Tedlar polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) film is for laminating metal roofing and building wall panels. Roofing and metal panels laminated with Tedlar film resist corrosion from seawater and salt spray. Tedlar film resists harsh chemicals and corrosion, fading, chalking, cracking and blistering caused by UV exposure. It is sold by Titan Steel and Metal Alliance in the North American and Caribbean markets.
Bay Insulation Systems Inc.
Bay Insulation Systems’ faced metal building insulation is comprised of a resilient, light density, fiberglass blanket (NAIMA 202-96 insulation only) laminated to a vapor retarder facing. Faced fiberglass can be installed as a single layer or combined with un-faced metal building insulation fiberglass and support hardware to create a high R-value system. It is Home Innovations Lab certified to meet R-value, noted on the label, and has UL on the label to certify it meets Fire Class Rating A for interior use.
Dynamic Fastener
Dynamic Fastener’s 14-20 by 1 1/2-inch Fenderhead T-5 fasteners fasten steel to structural steel from 1/4- to 5/8-inch total steel thickness. 12-24 by 1 1/2-inch T-5 fasteners fasten 1/2-inch of steel thickness.
Pacific Insulation Products LLC
Pacific Insulation’s R-Seal rigid board continuous metal building insulation is an exterior and interior faced rigid polyurethane foam envelope system with air barrier integral tape tabs. Pre-engineered metal buildings are detailed with a trim package for R-Seal the same as those for insulated metal panels (IMPs). Long fasteners for the through-fastened wall and/or roof sheeting and flashing that fits the insulation’s thickness are required. Additionally, considerations for sheer are made.
Butler Manufacturing
Butler’sTier II Classic metal building system is designed for short delivery schedules to builders and fast assembly. Options include skirt walls, adjacent units below eaves and below-eave canopies at end walls. Buildings can be designed with ThermaWall insulated metal panels and TextureWall panels. Also, Butler Express Mezz System mezzanines may be added.
Silvercote LLC
Silvercote’s Energy Saver FP (fall protection) is made of glass mineral wool insulation and welded fabric panels. Bright fabric panels are welded to exceed ASTMD-751 and sized to minimize field modifications. The fabric panels are installed to roof interiors with a network of banding straps. There is an outer perforated foil laminated layer that reflects heat gain in the wall double layer system. Energy Saver FP provides OSHA-compliant fall protection at leading edges.
S-5!
S-5!’s WindClamp2Xs are attached to double-folded standing seam roof systems to increase wind uplift resistance. The aluminum clamps are placed over seams at intervals to prevent male-to-female seam separation and/or seam separation from a roof’s mounting clip.
Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings
Sherwin-Williams’ Fluropon Metal Trends Color Collection features eight color families: Gold and Brass, Bronze, Silver and Nickel, Blackened Steel, Copper, Steel, Zinc and Anodized. All of the colors mimic the classic aesthetic of natural and anodized metals with performance of the Fluropon architectural coating system.
Certainteed
CertainTeed’s InsulSafe fiberglass blowing insulation is for pneumatic installation in open areas and minimizes dust and static electricity during application. InsulSafe XC will not settle, rot or decay, and is engineered to last the life of the building. The insulation is noncombustible and noncorrosive and does not retain moisture. InsulSafe XC is environmentally sustainable, formaldehyde free and has a GREENGUARD Gold Certificate.
Metl-Span
Metl-Span’s FRP CleanSeam insulated metal panels (IMPs) resist mold, mildew and rot. They have a Class 1, zero ozone depleting foam core. Wall and partition panels join seamlessly with a two-part caulk system.

SFS
The SFS Bi-Met 300 self-drilling screw melds 304 stainless steel and alloy steel to leverage their differing strengths, rust protection and strength. The hardened, carbon steel tip and lead threads eliminate the need for pre-drilling and allows builders to use only one tool instead of two, reducing installation time, labor costs and tool maintenance costs. Can be used in light, medium or heavy-gauge metal connections.
PPG Industries Inc.
PPG’s Coraflon Platinum powder coating is for architectural extrusions and sheet aluminum. It is a fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) fluoropolymer powder coating with high transfer efficiency rates of more than 20% and corrosion resistance.
Atlas Bolt and Screw Co.
Atlas’ Ultimate Fasteners come in various lengths and head sizes, and two models: metal-to-metal and metal-to-wood. The fasteners have zinc-cast heads with a magnetic nut setters for fitting sockets. Paint adheres for consistent weathering performance. The metal-to-wood Ultimate Fastener has a Dekfast Multi-Seal Washer with four sealing points to ensure positive sealing.
Metallic Products Corp.
Metallic’s die-formed flashing can be used for applications including wall-to-roof transitions, roof-to-wall transitions and high-side eaves. The flashing comes in R-panel and M/U-panel profiles. It can be broken to fit specific roof pitches prior to shipping. The flashing attaches directly to panels with fasteners and tape mastic. A 10-foot coverage is standard and custom lengths are available. Flashing is produced in Galvalume, Polar White and custom colors. It has oven-cured powder coating that ensures paint adhesion and makes it less susceptible to scratches, fading and flaking.
